No os voy a engañar: Hanói me decepcionó. Me encantan las ciudades asiáticas, caóticas, llenas de esa energía que solo encuentras en esa parte del mundo…pero hay algo de la ciudad del norte de Vietnam que me frenó la pasión y el enamoramiento. No sabría definir la razón por exactitud, pero os aseguro que Ho Chi Minh City me sedujo muchísimo más que Hanoi.
Por muy increíble que parezca, hay una gran diferencia cultural entre la población de Hanói y la del Sur de Vietnam.
Hanoi me transmitió mucha más frialdad en el trato, mucho menos ‘modernismo’ en la moda y en el consumo, muchas menos cosas que descubrir y experimentar que Ho Chi Minh City.
No me malinterpretéis: la ciudad es bonita, hay muchas cosas que visitar, empaparse de historia del país es una actividad infinita y los museos de la ciudad son a veces interesantes…
¿Queréis una lista de must do? ¡Ahi va!
–Llevar ropa de abrigo si viajáis en la misma época que yo (Noviembre-Enero). Hay que tener una cosa en cuenta, amigos: la diferencia de clima de una parte a otra del país puede ser abismal: ¡Y lo sufrí! ¡Pasé un frío inesperado y bastante desagradable en mis días de estancia en la ciudad!
-Visitas obligadas: El lago Hoan Kiem, el gran mercado Dong Xuan, la Opera, el museo de las mujeres vietnamitas, el templo de la literatura, el palacio presidencial, la ciudadela de Thang Long, la pagoda Trang Quoc, el viejo barrio de las 36 calles…
-Impactante: la cárcel de Hoa Lo. La visita es dura. La puesta en escena, con maniquíes incluidos, retrata el sufrimiento y las condiciones inhumanas de encarcelamiento de los prisioneros vietnamitas durante la guerra.
-¿Dónde comer y dormir? El backpackers district (barrio mochilero) ofrece todo tipo de alojamientos, miles de hoteles pequeñitos a buen precio y muchos sitios para tomar algo o comer. Sí, es un barrio muy turístico pero también con bastante buen ambiente.
-De compras. Hanói tiene varios centros comerciales y muchas tiendas, aptas para todos los bolsillos. Pero Ho Chi Minh es mucho más interesante a la hora de quemar la tarjeta de crédito. Hanoi no tiene tanta moda como su competidora. Si lo que buscas son falsificaciones de baja calidad y souvenirs baratos, encontrarás de todo…Pero no mucho más.

Let’s be honest: Hanói disappointed me. I love Asian cities, their chaos, the amazing energy that you only find in that part of the world … but there is something about that city of the north of Vietnam that didn’t really worked with me. I couldn’t really define the exact reason, but I assure you that Ho Chi Minh City seduced me much more than Hanoi.
Incredible as it may seem, there is a great cultural difference between the population of Hanoi and the one that lives in the south of Vietnam.
Hanoi seemed a lot more cold to me, less ‘modern’ in fashion and creativity, with less things to discover and experience than Ho Chi Minh City.
Don’t get me wrong: the city is beautiful, there are many things to visit, soaking in the history of the country is a really enjoyful activity and the museums of the city are sometimes interesting …
Do you want a ‘must do’ list? Here it goes!
– Take warm clothes if you travel during the same season that the one I chose (November-January). And keep in mind something, my friends: the difference in climate from one part of the country to the other can be huge: And I suffered it! It was really cold when I was there and I didn’t expected it at all!
– Must-see locations: Hoan Kiem Lake, Dong Xuan Grand Market, Opera House, Vietnamese Women’s Museum, Literature Temple, Presidential Palace, Thang Long Citadel, Trang Quoc Pagoda, The 36 streets quarter …
-The most impactant place and experience: Hoa Lo prison. The visit is hard. The whole thing portrays the suffering and inhuman conditions of imprisonment of Vietnamese prisoners during the war.
“Where to eat and sleep?” The backpackers district offers all types of accommodation, thousands of hotels at a great price and many places to have something to eat or drink. Yes, it is a very touristy neighborhood but also with a pretty good atmosphere.
-Shopping. Hanoi has several shopping centers and many shops, suitable for all budgets. But Ho Chi Minh is much more interesting when it comes to burning your credit card. Hanoi is not as fashionable as its competitor, Ho Chi Minh city. If you are looking for cheap and bad quality replicas of the most important luxury brands and cheap souvenirs, you will find everything … But not much more.
