Lombok, Part II

Tras pasar dos días en la zona Norte de la isla y disfrutar del hotel Tugu, decidí poner rumbo a la parte Sur de Lombok. Mi guía, Eko Mangsit, y su chófer, me llevaron desde Tanjung hasta Kuta (Lombok) haciendo paradas para poder ver algo de la isla aprovechando el viaje.

Para facilitar la narración, iré enumerando simplemente cada ‘Stop’ de interés efectuado.

Malimbu: desde el alto de ese acantilado que se sitúa en la carretera costera que va desde Tanjung hacia Senggigi, la vista a las islas Gili y el paisaje son impresionantes. La parada merece la pena.
Pura Batu Bolong. Un poco más hacia el Sur, ese templo tallado en la roca no tiene nada espectacular, pero merece la pena la parada para observar un trozito del mar que se divide entre el agujero natural de la piedra del templo.
Cakranegara. Imperdible. Su tráfico, su energía, su gran mercado, su mezquita y todo lo que incluye la ciudad me encantó. Perfecto para comprar todo lo que se te antoje y prestarte eal juego del regateo.
Desa Sukarara. Este pequeño pueblecito del centro de Lombok abre sus puertas a todo visitante que quiera descubrir el arte del tejido de textiles indonesio. A la entrada del pueblo, una de sus habitantes se ofrece para guiarte por cada rincón del lugar y la visita termina por una mini clase muy divertida. Al salir, siempre intentarán venderte lo que pueden, pero una donación es suficiente si no quieres llevarte nada…y merece realmente la pena.
Penujak. Lombok es conocida por sus múltiples pueblos de artesanos de cerámica. Visitar uno de ellos es peligroso: ¡te lo quieres llevar todo! Es muy interesante ver cómo trabajan y viven esos verdaderos artistas. Descubrir sus técnicas tradicionales es un gusto.
Kuta. Toda la zona Sur de la isla tiene por mayor (e único) interés sus playas. Si tuviese que elegir una, sería sin duda la de Tanjun Aan, una playa que se divide en dos largos caminos de arenas diferentes. Por un lado, gruesa y más oscurita, y por el otro una arenita fina blanca que enamorará a los amantes de aguas claras y playas paradisíacas. Kuta no es de mis lugares favoritos, pero si lo que buscas son chiringuitos y lugares para cenar y tomarte una copa después de pasar largos días surfeando o tirado en una tumbona, te gustará.
Hammerhead Hotel. Ahí culminó mi viajecito al sur. Me alojé dos noches en ese pequeño hotel de Kuta y la verdad es que mi estancia fue muy agradable. El lugar es limpio, su equipo maravilloso y su localización perfecta. Relación calidad-precio muy buena y un desayuno muy correcto. Os lo recomiendo.

After spending two days in the north of the island, I decided to head to the southern part of Lombok. My guide, Eko Mangsit, and his driver, took me from Tanjung to Kuta (Lombok) making stops to see the most places of the island I could, as we were doing our trip down. I’ll simply enumerate each ‘Stop’ of interest I remember I made.
Malimbu: from the top of the cliff that is situated on the coastal road from Tanjung to Senggigi, the view to the Gili islands and the landscape are breathtaking. Really nice to stop here.
Pura Batu Bolong. After driving a few kilometers more to the south, you will find this temple carved into the rocks. It has nothing spectacular, but it worths the stop, and the nice view you can have by just looking at the little peace of sea that appears between through the rock of the natural hole of the temple.
Cakranegara. You definitely must visit the city. Its traffic, its energy, its big market, its mosque and all that a quick visit to the town includes the city is great. It’s a perfect place to buy everything you could possibly want and just to have fun negotiating every single price they give you the first time you ask.
Desa Sukarara. This small village in the center of Lombok is open to any visitor who wants to discover the art of weaving by the traditional Indonesian style and art. At the entrance of the village, one of its inhabitants introduces himself to escort you through every corner of the place and the visit ends with a funny mini lesson. On leaving, they always try to sell what they can, but a donation is enough if you do not want to buy anything … and it really worth it.
Penujak. Lombok is known for its many ceramic villages. Visiting one of them is risky: you will want to buy absolutely everything! It is very interesting to see how they work and live.
Kuta. The whole South part of the island has plenty of (and only) beautiful beaches. If I had to choose one, it would certainly be ‘Tanjun Aan’, a beach which is divided in two long paths of different types of sand. On one side, thicker and dark, and on the other a white fine, like coral one, that will captivate lovers of clear waters and dreamy beaches. Kuta is not one of my favorite places of Indonesia so far, but if you are looking for nice bars and places to have diner and a drink after spending long days surfing or lying on a deckchair, you’ll like the place.
Hammerhead Hotel. That little hotel was the end of my trip. I stayed two nights there, in Kuta, and the truth is that my stay was very nice. The place is clean, they have a wonderful staff and a perfect location. Good value for the price, and a very correct breakfast. Highly recommended.
